Achensee
The **Achensee** is **Tirol**’s largest lake—turquoise-blue waters framed by steep mountain slopes, famous as the **"Sea of the Alps"**.
Highlights
The Achensee is located in the triangle between Innsbruck, Kufstein, and Bavaria, and with an area of 6.8 km², it is the largest lake in Tirol. Its crystal-clear, turquoise water reaches temperatures of up to 25°C in summer—ideal for swimming, sailing, surfing, and diving. The lake is surrounded by the steep walls of the Karwendel and the Brandenberger Alpen. The main towns, Achenkirch and Pertisau, offer direct lakeside access, family-friendly hotels, and numerous mountain railways. In winter, the Christlum ski area in Achenkir beckons. Since 1887, the Achenseeschifffahrt has connected the towns with historic steamships.
